World Food Programme: Food Security and Market Monitoring Report for April - June 2011

Since March 2011, all wheat grain and animal feed transfer to the Gaza Strip shifted from Karni to Kerem Shalom crossing point, following the Israeli decision to close Karni cross-ing point indefinitely. While the capacity of the Kerem Shalom conveyor belt is lower than the capacity at Karni crossing (45 trucks per day compared to 120 trucks per day), the conveyor belt operates 5 days a week, compared to only 2 days a week at Karni crossing, supposedly compensating for the lower capacity.

Nevertheless, as can be seen from the graph below, the average wheat grain transfer has been decreasing since the first half of 2010. The average amount of wheat grain since Karni closure transferred through the official crossings has decreased to approximately 7,500 MT compared to the average 12,000-13,000 MT (= a decrease of approximately 40%) in the first half of 2010.
